About Me

Born in Durban, South Africa in 1975, Jon studied Architecture in Port Elizabeth and Registered as an Architectural Professional in 1995. Whilst studying, Jon became passionate about the visual possibilities of photography and has been a keen hobbyist/part-time professional ever since.

Jon has worked many years in Cape Town, South Africa, before moving to Dublin, Ireland and then on to Brisbane, Australia, where he is practising architecture in a local firm. It was this exposure to diverse built and natural environments and landscapes that has made Jon devote himself to shooting landscapes and architecture.

“I have always loved being outdoors so I think shooting landscapes is a natural progression. Numerous hiking expeditions have allowed me to carry my cameras and tripod to some fantastic locations.
Architectural photography is an extension of my love of design in my work. My understanding of architecture allows me to portray a building in the way in which the Architect envisaged it.”

“I try not to impose too much on my subject, preferring to be patient and work with the nuances of natural light, even if it means returning to the same spot repeatedly. I would rather not take the shot than return with an image I am not convinced about.”

“I shoot predominately from Canon Digital SLR’s for most of my work, although I still shoot copious amounts of Fuji Velvia transparency film. The digital workflow gives me the control over the whole image making process I have always wanted, and ensures I know I have the image I envisaged before I leave the location.”
